Mastering Menaces
Readers of the ordinary newspapers of the day might easily believe that human existence is precarious and even perilous, so laden are their pages with accounts of evil—cupidity and crime, poverty and pain, disaster, disease, and death. This is not surprising, however, because spiritually unenlightened humanity, accepting material sense testimony as valid, believes that evil is equal, if not superior, to good in power and influence. So men are menaced by evil, threatened with trouble; and even when they are free from other ills they may be filled with fear of the future so acute and nagging as to make them miserable.
Now, all this is contrary to God's will for His children as it was explained and exemplified by Christ Jesus. He said plainly, "I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me." Then, in proving that God's will for all is good, Christ Jesus overcame every phase of evil. In demonstrating the fact that health and wholeness accord with God's will, the Master healed those who were diseased, blind, deaf, and maimed; in showing the providence of divine Love he fed the fainting multitudes; in confirming God's promises of protection and dominion he cast out devils or evils and stilled the storm on the Sea of Galilee; and in supporting his statements about eternal life the Master overcame death for others and for himself. Thus he mastered the evils which menace men, disturb their peace, and rob them of happiness and security.
Many Bible students have been misled into believing that healing by spiritual power and means is no longer possible, for Christian practice, they have been told, is now limited to the overcoming of sin, full salvation from all evil being reserved as a post-mortem reward for the righteous. They have been counseled to face with fortitude the threats of evil, and to be resigned without murmuring to the suffering and sorrow which God is supposed to send or sanction. But men need no longer be burdened and bound by such false teaching, for humanity's legitimate longing for present release and protection from evil has found its response in Christian Science.
