About ten years ago we became dissatisfied with the church which we were then attending, as we could not reconcile its teaching with that of Jesus. A friend, hearing of our difficulty, invited us to attend a service in a Christian Science church. We were so well pleased with the service that we have not missed one since, except when we have been in a town in which there is no church or society.
We did not believe that we needed the healing power of Christian Science, as the ailments to which we were in bondage were taken as a matter of course. In this we were agreeably mistaken, and in less than six months after beginning the study of Christian Science I had the following experience, which was a revelation to me. The secretary of an engineering society asked me to deliver a lecture before the members. This I agreed to do, even though I was fearful of speaking in public. The influence of Science, however, was already sustaining me as I proceeded with the preparation of my paper, with no thought of fear of facing an audience. Several days before the meeting I became so hoarse that I could not speak above a whisper; and when the secretary was advised of my condition he urged me to proceed, saying that if it were impossible for me to talk he would read my paper. This condition continued right up to the time that I was scheduled to speak. When I went onto the platform I began my lecture and continued to the end without fatigue, and everyone in the audience could easily hear me. During the course of my lecture several members present tried to confuse me with irrelevant questions tinged with sarcasm. This situation was met with love, with the result that the president of the society rebuked these members and commended me for my tact in handling the situation. This experience left me with a great sense of humility, as I could not help but realize that if with my small knowledge of Christian Science I was able to meet this situation, any problem could be met with increased knowledge. It gave me a clearer concept of Mrs. Eddy's words on page vii in the Preface to Science and Health, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."
The foregoing experience encouraged me to study more diligently, with the result that physical ailments, such as constipation and catarrh, were healed without special work being done.
