At the time of my marriage I thought the religion of my wife would not affect me in the least, that it would be satisfactory for her; but I was not inclined to give it much credit. She had attended a Christian Science Sunday School and was at that time going regularly to the Sunday and Wednesday services. I had no intention of going with her. It was only a short while, however, before I began reading the textbook when I was certain she would not see me doing it. I slowly gleaned from the inspired pages of Science and Health a slight understanding of the simplicity and accuracy of Mrs. Eddy's writings and soon expressed a desire to accompany my wife to church.
I then became sincerely interested and spent considerable time in an earnest endeavor to gain a clearer understanding of the basic facts of this new-found religion. Shortly, a quick and permanent healing of boils, from which I had suffered periodically for many years, quickened my desire for further understanding. Since then, nothing but Christian Science has been used to meet every problem that has faced us.
Two years ago I fell on an icy sidewalk and severely injured my knee. This occurred early on a Monday morning as I was preparing to leave on a business trip. I was unable to move my leg or to bear any weight on it. A friend very kindly helped me into my house. The aid of a practitioner was immediately secured, but, although the pain was soon lessened, I was still unable to move the leg. I was Reader in the local church at that time, and when Wednesday arrived I was still not able to touch my foot to the floor. A suggestion was made that it would probably be necessary to secure a substitute for the Wednesday evening meeting, whereupon a member of the family declared emphatically that it was not necessary at all if I would only take a definite stand against this intruder and know that, as a son of God, there was absolutely nothing capable of keeping me from doing what it was my duty to do. This awakened me, and immediately the discordant condition was relieved. The meeting was conducted that evening as usual. The following day I returned to work, and I have experienced no difficulty from that source since that time.
