Call Bulletin

Christian Science is the religion of Christ Jesus and includes the practice by its adherents of the healing work which marked the earthly career of the Founder of Christianity, and which he promised his followers would likewise do in destroying sickness as well as sin.

Christian Science was discovered in 1866 by Mary Baker Eddy, a gentle New England woman, whose love for God and devotion to the Scriptures were such that she ultimately attained unique spiritual-mindedness, which enabled her to discern and understand the Principle underlying Christ Jesus' great works. This discernment and understanding followed a healing which she had received of the effects of an injury which neither medicine nor surgery was able to reach—a healing which she recognized was related to her reading of the Bible and resulted from the influence of divine Spirit.

After this healing she withdrew from the world for three years, studying the Bible, accepting the revelation of its spiritually scientific meaning which came to her, and demonstrating its truths. On the basis of this revelation she was able to announce and prove and teach others to prove, through healing of discord of every kind, that all causation is divine Mind, or God, and every real effect a divinely mental phenomenon.

Followers came to her religion as a result of the blessings they received through utilization of its spiritual teaching. The Church which she thus founded, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, now has, with its more than twenty-six hundred branches, representation in every part of the world, and numbers among its adherents members of every civilized race. Through its emphasis upon the nature of man as the image and likeness of God, as taught by the Bible, Christian Science is improving human experience by showing the wholesomeness and desirability of practicing purity, honesty, integrity, benevolence, and kindred qualities, and this practice rests upon a perception of the spiritual universe, in which man lives in perfect harmony with God.

Among the activities of The Mother Church, as founded by Mrs. Eddy, is The Christian Science Publishing Society, from whose building in Boston are issued the periodicals of the Christian Science church, including The Christian Science Monitor, an international daily newspaper.
