Love without Ceasing

Paul's admonition to "pray without ceasing" might be paraphrased to read, Love without ceasing. For prayer and love are identical in their operation and result, as may be discovered by an earnest study of the two words in the light of their scientific and true meaning, made plain through the teachings of Christian Science.

Mrs. Eddy has given us in her scientific writings a high and profound understanding of prayer. She points out in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 3) that prayer is not a mere pleading "for unmerited pardon and for a liberal outpouring of benefactions." Highest prayer means an intelligent knowing and declaring of the provable facts about God and man; a beholding of the perfect man as he is in reality.

When the Christian Scientist engages in prayer, he turns away from the seeming mortal in order that the real man may take his rightful place in thought. That is prayer; and it is also love. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science has given us a clear explanation of this process in "No and Yes" (p. 39), where she says, "True prayer is not asking God for love; it is learning to love, and to include all mankind in one affection."
