Love and gratitude fill my heart as I think of the infinite...
Love and gratitude fill my heart as I think of the infinite blessings that are unfolding to mankind through understanding the truth as taught in Christian Science. This is the "pearl of great price" that makes its possessor truly rich.
In the spring of 1917, after a long period of weakness and suffering, I was informed by three doctors that if I were to regain my health, a major operation would have to be performed, but they could give me no assurance that I should be well even if this were done. However, as all hope seemed to rest with the doctors, my husband took me to the nearest large city, where the best medical attention might be obtained. Here provisional plans were laid for my entrance into a hospital as soon as I became stronger; and a doctor who had been recommanded by a well-known surgeon in the East was to take the case.
That afternoon we drove to a city a few miles distant, where we were to spend the night with friends. When my father, who was not a Christian Scientist, heard what the doctor had said, he asked me why I did not see a Christian Science practitioner. I went to a practitioner and told her what the doctors had said. She then told me about God in such a beautiful way that my ills were blotted out of my consciousness; and I eagerly listened as she clearly and lovingly told me of God, who is omnipresent Love. That day I received my first Christian Science treatment. The next morning I again went to see her, and after another beautiful talk and a second treatment I started for my valley home many miles distant. As I left the practitioner, I felt much uplifted; it seemed as if I never before had been so happy and so free. I was healed, though I did not fully realize it at the time. All the way my heart kept singing, "God is Love." When the high, narrow grades over which we had to pass were reached, I looked over the edge with such a sense of Love's omnipresence that the old fear of grades and of mountain roads was entirely gone. Upon reaching home I joyously assumed the duties that for many months had seemed beyond my strength. Every minute that was not needed for these duties was spent in reading Science and Health to find out how to apply the truths taught us in the Bible. Constipation, appendicitis, frequent colds, severe headaches, and other disorders were wiped out as the false beliefs which had produced them were erased from consciousness.
