For many years I suffered from heart disease, and about...
For many years I suffered from heart disease, and about seven years ago the trouble became worse. The medical faculty had diagnosed lesion of the aorta, and radioscopy had confirmed this statement. Crises had become so severe, so long-continued, and so frequent that I had been forbidden to move at all for fear that the outcome would be fatal. The physician had even advised my children to return from vacation, and they had come in order to be with me. That was the situation when a friend of ours, a Christian Science practitioner who had previously spoken to me about this Science without arousing my interest, learned of the seriousness of my condition and came to my aid, again proposing Christian Science to me. I accepted it as eagerly as a drowning man grasps the branch held out to him, although I felt serious scruples against accepting then, in a condition which I knew to be desperate, the benefits of a religion which I had chosen to ignore in better times. But my friend kindly reassured me; time was short, and she gave me a treatment. After several treatments I slept as I had been unable to do for many months, and within a few days I was completely healed.
I was filled with gratitude to God, conscious of His power and an abundance of new thoughts; I gradually lost the fear which had always bound me, gained greater understanding each day, and discovered the truth little by little in the precious Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
This healing greatly impressed our relatives and those about me. People questioned me, asked for explanations, and talked of miracles, and I was so happy to tell them that I owed my healing to Christian Science. As Paul says in his first epistle to the Corinthians, "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal." I touched the border of what I called death before I gained some understanding of Truth and Life, and my healing was the example which aided many to understand Christian Science and become its students.
