When the opportunity came to teach music in Montana,...

When the opportunity came to teach music in Montana, I was advised to accept, since it was supposed that the climate there was especially beneficial and would free me from colds and headaches. Several of my pupils there were Christian Scientists, and I now know their thought helped me at a time when I seemed antagonistic toward Christian Science, which antagonism was due to ignorance and prejudice. One day the mother of one of my pupils said to me, "There is only one Mind." I did not understand her then, but the statement remained with me and later bore fruit.

After two attacks of influenza, headaches—supposedly inherited—returned. Often I would become unconscious, and waken unable to remember anything. I tried medicine, different diets, chiropractic, and osteopathy, but all to no purpose; and despite the success of my music school I was forced to discontinue and return to a lower altitude. Eventually I reached Chicago, only to find myself confined to bed with pleurisy. I had been praying to God the best I knew how, and after a few days I received a telephone message asking me to do advance publicity work, which would require constant travel. I got up, dressed, and started on my journey. When I reached my first town I had to employ others to do my work; but God's hand was truly leading me, for here a lady showed me how to study the Bible with Science and Health by using the Christian Science Quarterly, and answered my questions so clearly that I bought a copy of the textbook. I could not put it down. In two days my glasses were of no use to me, and the headaches have not returned during the past thirteen years. I was literally lifted into "the land of Christian Science, where fetters fall and the rights of man are fully known and acknowledged," as Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, pp. 226, 227).

For three years I could not bring myself to read any other literature but Christian Science, and every difficulty which presented itself was immediately mastered, until I moved into a different environment and had frequent attacks of dizziness which did not yield to my own work. Finally I was led to a faithful practitioner who awakened me to the need of a better understanding of spiritual law, to obedience, and to renunciation of the false self that would blind one to spiritual vision and receptivity. When I returned to Chicago the doctor who had last treated me asked what had happened, since I seemed transformed. Christian Science has indeed worked a transformation.
