A few years ago I had a beautiful healing of a crushed bone in one of my arms at the elbow, the result of an accident. A friend who was with me and I declared the truth as we are taught in Christian Science. After about half an hour I walked to my house, mentally singing some of our hymns. My arm pained me so much during the night that I did not sleep, but I read Science and Health, and pondered the truth about God and man. In the morning I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner for treatment, as my elbow was stiffening so that I could not dress myself, and another friend came to help me. I wanted the arm X-rayed, so an appointment was made with a well-known surgeon. The practitioner reminded me of Mrs. Eddy's words in "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 103, 104): "Even while his [Jesus'] personality was on earth and in anguish, his individual being, the Christ, was at rest in the eternal harmony. His unseen individuality, so superior to that which was seen, was not subject to the temptations of the flesh, to laws material, to death, or the grave. Formed and governed by God, this individuality was safe in the substance of Soul, the substance of Spirit,—yea, the substance of God, the one inclusive good." I began to realize that my real self was spiritual, the image and likeness of God, subject alone to His eternal law of good.

I went to the surgeon for examination and two pictures were taken. I never saw them, but the surgeon told the practitioner that the radius bone was crushed at the elbow, and that I should have to take care of it from six to eight weeks and keep my arm in a sling. He did not set the bone. That was on a Monday, and I went to the Sanatorium of The Christian Science Benevolent Association at Chestnut Hill. On the following Wednesday I was awakened at dawn with a wonderfully joyous sense of freedom, and I said aloud. "I am healed." I tried to lift my arm, but it fell back. I was not disappointed about this, for a deeper conviction was flooding my consciousness so that I reached out for my Bible and the Christian Science textbook and read eagerly until about seven o'clock in the morning; then I fell asleep. On Thursday I went to the surgeon's office without the sling. He was astonished to see me without it. He then made me bend down and untie and tie my shoe, which I did, and I also did some finger and arm exercises. At last he said, "You Christian Scientists beat me."

This was a lovely healing because it also healed me of a sense of resentment over something which I had thought unfair. I learned that I needed greater humility and meekness in order to be healed. I have experienced other healings, but this one is the most outstanding. I am deeply grateful for the faithful work of the practitioner which wrought so quick a healing.
