Right View of Finances

In connection with the affairs of individuals, organizations, communities, and nations today, one hears much about finance. Dissertations and discussions on this subject are voluminous and varied, and reveal so much differing opinion that the Christian Scientist realizes he must be alert in forming correct conclusions on this important topic. In his study of the Bible and the works of our beloved Leader he finds the same unerring guidance in this as in all other questions. Each student will do well to analyze this subject from a purely mental standpoint, as our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, teaches. For this purpose the Concordances to our Leader's writings are of invaluable assistance.

An individual is often tempted to confine his thinking on the subject of finance to his own personal affairs, feeling that the expenditures of nations or communities are no concern of his. It is obvious, however, that the government of world-wide organizations represents the collective thinking of the individuals of which they are composed. But the Christian Scientist, knowing that each individual must work out his own salvation, learns to differentiate between divine guidance, which inspires men to unselfed love for humanity, and those influences which serve greed or desire for power or fame. And he gratefully acknowledges that in the world today there is much evidence of progress in the right direction.

"Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee," was the simple response of Peter to the one who asked an alms at the temple, and through his clear understanding of what man really is and what he really needs he gave to the suppliant that which could not be measured in terms of money—restoration to his normal manhood.
