Making Use of Divine Power
What a power for good Christian Science bestows on all who understand its teachings! By revealing to them that God is omnipotent and that man is God's image, it shows them that the real man reflects unlimited power. The problem is for them to demonstrate the truth. We should be quite clear on this question because of its great importance. To repeat: the real spiritual selfhood of each of us is the image of God. This spiritual selfhood, therefore, perfectly reflects the power of God. As we learn this truth, as we understand it, our aim should be to conform our lives to it, in order that we may utilize divine power throughout our human experience.
Christ Jesus knew how to make use of divine power. We have his own words to this effect to his disciples, as recorded in Matthew's Gospel: "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth." And every student of the Bible is surely aware that the Master used this power throughout his ministry to heal all manner of disease and sin and to overcome false material law. Spiritual power was to him the only real power; and it was spiritual power, not so-called material power, that he used in performing the many marvelous works recorded of him in the Gospels.
Jesus is our Way-shower, our Exemplar. If, then, we would utilize the power of God, we must think as he did and conform our lives to God's law. The Nazarene had a profound understanding of God and His law; a profound knowledge of man, God's image and likeness; a profound conviction of evil's nothingness. His followers must have a measure of the same understanding or knowledge; for unless they have, they will not be able to do works of healing similar to his or dominate so-called material law as he dominated it. Just as the Master conformed his thought and actions to his understanding of God and God's law, so must his followers. Otherwise, they will not be able to utilize divine power.
