In 1923 I began the study of Christian Science only...
In 1923 I began the study of Christian Science only after all other means had failed me in my search for health and relief from suffering. I had had a major operation, after which adhesions formed. Several months later I was operated on for the adhesions, only to have others form. I could not stand straight for more than a few minutes without leaning against something for support. My eyes were also badly affected, and I could see neither to read nor to write. At this time a loved one passed on, and so hopeless seemed my condition that had it not been for two small children I am quite certain I should have attempted to take my own life.
I had always considered myself an atheist, and scoffed at religion as being only superstition. One who was also an atheist was staying with me and would read to me from the books and magazines which I had always enjoyed reading; but now they did not even interest me. Finally I asked her to read to me from the four Gospels. This was clearly against her desire, but she complied with my request. That reading made me long to prove true the promises of Christ Jesus. They sounded so convincing that I began to pray earnestly to know God—if there was a God such as Christ Jesus called his Father.
In a very short time the opportunity came to me to have Christian Science treatment, but I did not recognize this as an answer to my prayer, and turned again to material means for relief. The result of that last turning to earthly things for help completely convinced me that there was none such that could save me. The next time the opportunity of having Christian Science treatment was presented to me I was ready and willing to receive "the good God bestows" (Science and Health, p. 275). I had gone to an aunt in California, and she took me to a Christian Science practitioner. I shall never forget that experience. That day a new world opened up to me. My eyes were healed and I laid aside my glasses and have never worn them since. In a few months I was healed of adhesions, and I can now stand for hours without feeling fatigued.
