We are told that gratitude heals

We are told that gratitude heals. The following is an instance in which this was proved to me. A large swelling appeared in my throat. With the help of a Christian Science practitioner I was able to continue my daily duties through experiencing a sense of weakness. Fear suggested that it might be necessary to have my throat lanced. This wrong argument was quickly met by the use of the Bible verse, "The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword."

One night when the sense of discomfort made sleep impossible, I began to consider what could be wrong in my thinking that this healing should be so delayed. Suddenly, the realization came to me that I was watching matter, hoping for its cure; whereas God's child, I had learned in Christian Science, is spiritual and perfect. With gratitude and joyousness I began to sing our Leader's hymn beginning, "Shepherd, show me how to go" (Poems, p. 14). Soon afterward I fell asleep. In the morning the swelling broke and I was able to eat a hearty breakfast. Not the slightest discomfort was experienced in swallowing, and every vestige of soreness was gone.

I am also grateful for the healing of an entirely closed ear, injured while diving; for many experiences of painless dentistry; for being enabled, through an understanding gained in Christian Science, to find both home and position in a time of need; for the wisdom and patience of practitioners; and for the precious experience of class instruction. Above all I am grateful for the steadfast consecration of our Leader, who has shown us the way of escape from the misery of materiality.
