Christian Science was first brought to my attention in...
Christian Science was first brought to my attention in the year 1898, when I witnessed the healing of a sister who was freed from various ailments which had defied the skill of many physicians for years, but which yielded to Christian Science treatment in two weeks. I was of a supposedly nervous type and was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but my sister's understanding was sufficient to divert my thought with the truths of Christian Science and, for the time, prevent serious trouble.
Earnestly studying the letter of this new-found religion and later being privileged to enter the class of one of Mrs. Eddy's students, I was able to make progress, and many difficult experiences were lightened through a growing understanding of spiritual truth.
Since that time I have had severe tests in which impenetrable clouds and dark waters seemed to engulf me. This phase of experience is what our Leader terms "chemicalization," as the truths of Christian Science enter consciousness, stir up, expose, and destroy old beliefs, faults of character and disposition; and while the process may be painful to a great degree, there is the eternal reward of gaining higher spiritual ground, as each victory is won. I learned that the letter of itself was insufficient to solve any problem in this Science and that it was absolutely required that we "imbibe the spirit" (Science and Health, p. 495) in order to progress in understanding and demonstration. What gave me comfort more than all else was our Leader's explanation of man's inseparability from God, here and now. That being so, I gained the confidence, feeble at first, but ever increasing, that no matter what evidence the material senses presented to my thought or how long or tenacious the beliefs seemed, they simply had to go down and out before the power of Love, demonstrated.
