"The sustaining infinite"
FROM the earliest recorded history down to the present time, the human race has been engaged in a struggle for existence, constantly endeavoring to gain a vantage point from which to overcome the evils of lack, limitation, want, woe, sickness, sin, and death. That the basis from which this search has been conducted is fundamentally unsound is attested by the fact that the effort has been attended by a limited degree of success.
In the year 1866, Mary Baker Eddy discovered this vantage point or true basis for which humanity has so earnestly sought. In these words from the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. vii) she indicates the solution to this problem: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." This truly wonderful and far-reaching statement will bear much thought and analysis. There never was a time when the opportunities to prove its truth were greater than they are today; and students of Christian Science are availing themselves of these opportunities with a marked degree of success. If, however, they are not receiving and enjoying these blessings in an ever increasing measure, it is evident that they are not "leaning" sufficiently upon "the sustaining infinite."
At this juncture someone may say, I am earnestly striving to rely upon God, and yet my problems remain unsolved; what more can I do? Many passages throughout our text-book answer this query. One such passage reads (pp. 205, 206), "When we fully understand our relation to the Divine, we can have no other Mind but His,—no other Love, wisdom, or Truth, no other sense of Life, and no consciousness of the existence of matter or error." It is of vital importance that we gain a fuller understanding of God and of man's relation to Him; that we be alert, and always consciously grateful to God not only for our own blessings, but for His manifold gifts to all mankind; that we turn unreservedly to Him in our every need, assured of His guidance and supply. We may think we are doing this, but if harmonious results are not forthcoming, we may need to prove more positively that divine intelligence, not human sense, is directing our thinking.
