From the Field

[Extracts from the Annual Report of Christian Science Prison Committee for the State of Texas]

After approval by the churches and societies in Texas, the work of the Committee has been extended to provide for services at the Boys' School at Gatesville, where the Sunday school order of exercises is used, and at the Girls' School at Gainesville, where the order of church services for Sunday is used.

The regular services have continued without interruption at the "walls" or penitentiary at Huntsville, and at the nine prison farm camps now served by the Committee. On one Sunday when the hour came for the service at Huntsville, the Christian Science workers found that a boxing match was going on among inmates, just outside the chapel, the windows of which were open, and that a large crowd was watching the show, laughing and enjoying the event. Inside the chapel, however, there already were eighty men seated, waiting for the service. As soon as the service was started, others began to come in, and within ten minutes there were over one hundred and fifty men in the chapel, although the boxing match was still going on. Liberal recognition of the value of Christian Science services is accorded by the warden at Huntsville.

Interest has been shown among the girls at Gainesville in the study of the Lesson-Sermon, and many questions are asked our worker. There are about fifteen copies of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook in the library of the school, which must be checked out and in by the girls, and many times all sets are in use. This is another evidence of the growing interest in Christian Science in this institution.
