Many years ago, at the time of a great bereavement, a dear friend came to me and placed the Christian Science textbook in my hand. I knew nothing about Christian Science, had always avoided the subject when with my friend, and was a devoted member of an orthodox church. For one fleeting moment I resented the gift, but almost instantly a flood of love swept over me, and I realized that my friend wished to comfort me. This sympathy and the desire to help me were appreciated. Then it seemed as if I could do nothing less than accept the book and read it. For several months I read, becoming deeply interested. I did not read in an orderly, systematic manner; some days I did not read at all, and at other times I would become so absorbed I would read three and four hours at a time.
While reading in this way I was healed of hernia and of acute indigestion. The latter had tormented me at intervals for ten years. I did not know at this time that one could be healed of disease by reading the textbook, and did not attribute my healing to Christian Science, although I had taken no medicine and there was no other source from which I could have been restored to health. As a better understanding came to me I acknowledged with gratitude the healing I had received.
For some time I suffered from a very painful condition of my feet, finding it difficult to walk even a block. I never knew the medical term to apply to this complaint. While spending a little time with my daughter in a near-by city I went one evening to a Christian Science lecture. We were about a block and a half from the street car line. This distance was accomplished slowly and in pain. After the lecture I rose from my seat and walked easily out of the hall. There was absolute freedom from pain, and I was filled with a great exhilaration, so that instead of taking a car I walked all the way home.
