In the book of Psalms we are constantly counseled to "praise the Lord," but I seemed unable to find occasion for praise. Being self-conscious to the extent of shrinking from meeting people and also being burdened with sickness, I felt I had been unfairly treated.

My first contact with the healing truth as revealed by Mrs. Eddy came when I read the chapter on Prayer in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," a copy of which had been lent to my mother. I had read the chapter to pass the time away, as I had never heard of Christian Science before; but a few minutes afterwards I found that nasal catarrh, which army physicians had been unable to check, had completely vanished; and it has never returned.

For ten years after this healing I attended a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, but not until I was given the opportunity for work in a new branch church did I awaken to the need of taking Christian Science into my daily life and of making vigorous efforts to "praise the Lord." At this point I faced unemployment; and after five months without work, while I was studying the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly, the fifth and sixth verses from the third chapter of Proverbs stood out clearly and I resolved to "lean not unto [my] own understanding." I was led to call at an office I had always considered useless as a channel for employment, but work was available for me immediately, and within a month a much better position was offered in the same firm. During this period of unemployment our needs were beautifully supplied.
