About twenty years ago, Christian Science was presented...

About twenty years ago, Christian Science was presented to me while in a miserable condition of health. I suffered from an internal trouble which several physicians had diagnosed, and to which each had given a different name. One called the trouble acid stomach, another a misplaced kidney, another catarrh of the spleen; and another said that there were several small tumors. Every normal action of the body seemed to have stopped, and food caused me so much distress that I was afraid to eat.

One afternoon a lady came into the place where I was employed and, noticing how miserable I was, told me about Christian Science. I had never heard of it before except in ridicule, but I was willing to try anything except medicine. She assured me that the latter was out of the question and gave me the name of a Christian Science practitioner in another city. I wrote to him immediately, giving him a detailed account of my physical troubles. I expected a long letter in reply, but was surprised to receive a very brief letter asking if I had a Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and if I was a church member. This was the first step toward leading my thought away from the body into the channels of Truth and Love.

I had been an active worker in two different orthodox churches from girlhood but had lost all faith in them, believing prayers to be unanswered. After being advised by this practitioner I lost no time in obtaining a copy of Science and Health, and when I began to read I was convinced from the very first page that Christian Science was that for which I had been searching for some time—a practical, satisfying religion, one I could use in my everyday life.
