Talent

How often we hear it regretfully said, "Oh, if I only had the talent that others have!" Mortals, lacking an understanding of the cause of all things, have concluded that talent is a result of either heredity or chance—both beyond their control—and that those who have talent, being more favored, are more likely to succeed, and more able to enjoy themselves than are others.

Christian Science declares and proves by the logic of its spiritual teachings and by demonstration that such is never the truth, but rather, as the Bible states, that "all things come alike to all." Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes on page 13 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals. It is the open fount which cries, 'Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.'"

In order to understand that divine Love, God, bestows talent equally on all, we must first understand what talent is. A dictionary definition of "talent" is, "Faculty for effective performance along certain lines." "Effective performance," all will agree, is right or correct performance; so in order to do something effectively we must know or understand the right or correct way to do it. And since God is the source of all right action, all correct action, the understanding of the right way to do something is included in an understanding of God.
