It was forty years ago, when I was a young schoolgirl, that I first heard of Christian Science. My mother had a copy of Science and Health, and I remember hearing her say, "I believe that what Mrs. Eddy has written in this book is the truth." My mother did not take her stand for Christian Science at that time, but in later years she did so and became a registered practitioner.
At the age of seventeen I was prepared to teach school. My first school was in the country. I lived in a home where a Christian Science practitioner from a near-by city made regular visits for the purpose of elucidating this religion to her sister-in-law. I was invited to listen, and did so, because I felt I was not altogether a stranger to Christian Science, and because my mother had said it was good. This practitioner told of many beautiful healings that were taking place; but some of them were quite unbelievable to me. They stirred me quite a bit and I would leave the room and go by myself only to return to hear more.
I finally came to the point where I had to know if Christian Science was the truth, and I trustingly asked God to show me so I should never doubt. As I prayed I became quiet and peaceful. The next term I secured another position in a good-sized town and Christian Science dropped out of my thought. Two years later I was married and lived in a suburb of Boston, where once again I was in the atmosphere of Christian Science. An aunt had become a member of The Mother Church and I often accompanied her to the church services.
