A correspondent under the signature of BM/DE6, in your issue of the 8th inst., while endeavoring to explain the origin of evil, makes some incorrect statements about the teachings of Christian Science which I should like to correct. Christian Science is founded on the Scriptures, and its teachings on the subject of evil coincide with the definite statement of Jesus when, in speaking of the devil, evil, he said: "He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."

Christ Jesus gave neither place, power, nor embodiment to a lie, and neither does Christian Science. Evil is always a lie claiming the lack or absence of good and truth. Jesus destroyed this seeming lack by demonstrating the allness of God, of Life, Truth, and Love. In his wonderful statement, "The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me," Jesus showed that there is no response to evil in the true or spiritual consciousness, nothing to which it can attach itself. Could a lie attach itself to the real man, he would no longer be the image and likeness of his Maker.

On page 470 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes: "God is the creator of man, and, the divine Principle of man remaining perfect, the divine idea or reflection, man, remains perfect." "If man has lost perfection, then he has lost his perfect Principle, the divine Mind. If man ever existed without this perfect Principle or Mind, then man's existence was a myth." And she makes a very clear distinction between spiritual man and his suppositional opposite, mortal man, in the passage on pages 475 and 476: "A mortal sinner is not God's man. mortals are the counterfeits of immortals;" and, "Mortals will disappear, and immortals, or the children of God, will appear as the only and eternal verities of man." This important distinction is made throughout her writings. Spiritual man is ever in the presence of Spirit, expressing his perfect Principle, Love.
