Reflection

[Original article in German]

On page 301 of of textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes, "Few persons comprehend what Christian Science means by the word reflection." For a long time the meaning of this word was obscure to the writer, although she was quite familiar with the similes of the mirror and reflection.

One day she was sitting in a room having wainscoted walls against which were placed many kinds of metal objects—plates and jugs of pewter, silver, copper, brass, besides numerous glasses. Suddenly the setting sun threw its rays into the room, whereupon all the objects appeared in a bright light. Yet, they did not send forth the light, and it was not in them; it was reflected. In Christian Science we learn that Spirit, God, is not in man, but man in God's likeness reflects divine Mind.

Not all of the objects in this room reflected the same measure of light; those on the wall facing the window reflected the most. This observation seemed to the writer to indicate that, humanly speaking, individuals express of good only that which they reflect of God. Jesus said, "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise."
