Permit me to make a few remarks for the purpose of enlightenment in connection with Ae's statements about Christian Science in No. 46 of your paper.
One of his sentences reads in part: "For the sin denied by the Christian Scientist, the Christian needs forgiveness; he needs a Saviour such as is altogether unknown to the Christian Scientist." On this point the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," says in one of its six Tenets (p. 497): "... and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ;" and on page 23, the author, Mary Baker Eddy, writes, "The atonement requires constant self-immolation on the sinner's part."
Ae furthermore remarks that the interpretation of the Lord's Prayer given by the Founder is mere recitation. Whether any prayer becomes mere recitation depends entirely upon him who prays. Mrs. Eddy's interpretation represents a commentary to the prayer. "And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors" is interpreted by Mrs. Eddy to mean: "And Love is reflected in love" (ibid., p. 17). The Love that is reflected is God, of whom John writes, "God is love." Love is reflected—is manifested in our consciousness—when we forgive, obey Jesus' commands, or do unto others as we would be done by; when we love even our enemies, because we have seen that all are in reality the children of God. Charity, the Apostle Paul says, "thinketh no evil." Therefore, the good and the kindness we do to others is not done from a capacity of our own. Even Jesus said: "Why callest thou me good?" and Mrs. Eddy writes (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 57): "Man shines by borrowed light. He reflects God as his Mind, and this reflection is substance,—the substance of good." Divine Love is reflected in our love for our fellow men.
