Obedience to Spiritual Law
Christian Science reveals the truth about real being. It makes known to its students that in reality all men are under the law of God—spiritual law—and no other. How can this be? The answer is that since God is Spirit, real law must be the law of Spirit, or spiritual law. Further, since God is good, His law cannot be other than the law of good.
Because man is under the law of Spirit or the law of good, what is to be said of what is called material or evil law? Christian Science asserts positively that in true being there is no such law. Why? Because in reality there is no matter, no evil, God being infinite Spirit, infinite good. That which mankind calls material law thus exists only in supposititious mortal consciousness. That which mankind designates evil law exists only as false belief. Mortals, however, seem to be under spiritual law and material law, believing both to be real. The consequence is that they enjoy good or suffer from evil in the degree that they are obedient to the law of good or allow themselves to be subject to evil. There can be no question that whoever is obedient to spiritual law is God-governed, and proportionately free from evil domination.
What, more particularly, does it mean to be obedient to the law of God? It signifies that one is convinced that good alone is real; that the law of God, good, is the only law, and that one is demonstrating the fact. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 14 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "To be 'with the Lord' is to be in obedience to the law of God, to be absolutely governed by divine Love,—by Spirit, not by matter." The truth of her words is readily admitted when once the allness of God as Spirit or Love is understood. And it should be readily seen how obedience to the law of God or Love must bring about one's freedom from evil.
