In December, 1914, at my wife's request, I attended my first Christian Science Wednesday evening testimony meeting, and listened to several, to me, remarkable testimonies given by gentlemen whom I knew and respected. When we reached home, I immediately started reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and continued each evening as soon as I came home from work until I had completed the first reading. I undertook this reading solely because I realized from the testimonies I had heard that there was something in this book that I wanted to know about, and not with any thought of physical help; but when I had finished the first reading I found that I had been healed of a discordant condition of several years' standing. From that time on Christian Science has been our only remedy. Mumps, scarlet fever, measles, a fractured jaw, and other ailments have been quickly overcome.
On March 3, 1919, I was knocked from a seventy-five-foot scaffold. From the hospital to which I was taken an automobile was sent to get my wife, with instructions to her not to lose a moment if she wished to see me alive. As soon as she had seen me and had talked with the nurses, she telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner and work was commenced. The difficulties to be healed were a fractured skull, fractured and dislocated right shoulder, fractured ribs, punctured lung, fractured spine, double fracture of pelvis, dislocated left hip, and compound fracture of the right leg. I did not fully recover consciousness till March 28, but to the surprise of the surgeons I immediately began to gather strength and to improve, and the healing has been complete. Some little difficulty was encountered in the leg fracture because there was no surgeon who would undertake the task of setting it. They insisted that amputation was necessary, but my wife would not consent while I was unconscious. However, divine Love found a way: a bone specialist moved to our city, and on his first day met the surgeon in charge of my case and on to set the leg. He told me later that it was God who did the healing. The seven months in the hospital I look back on as one of the happiest periods of my life, for I spent from daylight to dusk with the writings of Mrs. Eddy.
I am truly grateful to our Leader for the understanding of God which she has made possible to us, and for all the avenues she has so wisely provided for increasing our understanding. I am particularly grateful for the peace and happiness, the difference in my outlook, and the desire to be worthy which the study of Christian Science has brought me. I also wish to express my gratitude for the loving, faithful service of the practitioners, who are ever ready to encourage and aid us on the road.—Hamish Macgregor Morris, Oakland, California.
