In 1918 my husband returned from the war in a desperate plight. Added to this, my son, then nine years old, became very ill and went rapidly through the stages of appendicitis, peritonitis, pneumonia, and empyema, until it seemed that he could not possibly grow strong and well again. My burdens seemed greater than I could bear. One morning, as I went into the yard for some wood, I heard someone say, "Good morning," and looking up I saw a neighbor smiling at me over the fence, a neighbor I had not yet spoken to as we had only recently moved into that house and knew no one near by. She asked me if I had ever heard of Christian Science, and if I would care to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. She knew nothing of it herself, but a relative had given her a worn copy of this textbook. I gratefully accepted, as I was a great reader.
About a fortnight later I was awakened in the night by my son, who, I could see, had the symptoms of pneumonia again. He was in great distress, but both my children found the truth when I did, for I read to them and we talked a great deal about it. So I sat beside him and read to him and comforted him, till presently he fell asleep, and my own fears abated. I knew no Christian Scientists, nor did I know that one could receive help through practitioners; but we had found during those two blessed weeks that God is Love. I sat there for several hours, reading Science and Health and communing with the one Mind; and the child waked up in the morning well.
One day about the same time, my little girl, aged six, came in from play screaming. She had bitten her tongue in jumping off a pile of sand. The truth was applied, her fear vanished, the bleeding stopped, and within a few minutes she was out playing again as happily as ever. We forgot the incident, and did not even look to see how the tongue was getting on.
