When all material help has failed and the extremity of...
When all material help has failed and the extremity of suffering seems to have been reached, how welcome is the word that God is Love, always present, ever available, and that He will heal all our diseases! Such was my boundless joy when given that blessed assurance.
I was raised in the belief that I was a very delicate child and had a nervous temperament. At the age of nine I had a hard fall, striking the end of my spine. This caused severe pain, and I did not seem to recover from it. I passed my girlhood years unable to take any strenuous exercise, having to be careful. I was not always able to attend school, and finally was compelled to give up a musical course on account of almost constant backache. Later the spinal trouble grew worse; constipation—supposedly caused by the fall—became exaggerated; the nervousness increased, and neuritis developed. Osteopathy, electrical treatments, and both schools of medicine were resorted to, osteopathy giving temporary relief, but no improvement of any permanency.
After twelve years of this condition, terminating in a complete nervous breakdown, I was led to Christian Science by my daughter's attending the church services and becoming interested to the extent of purchasing the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I began reading the book at once, and was deeply impressed with the first chapter, "Prayer." I resolved to see a practitioner and learn more about this new-old religion and its healing power, and more of God and man. After one visit all fear and misgiving left me, and the backache as well. The tense, nervous condition and extreme depression were lifted, and I seemed to be walking on air. The constipation was overcome in five days, the neuritis being slower to yield, owing to the fear of the intense pain; but in five weeks all signs of that, too, had left me and I was free.
