Teach Me to Wait

Teach me to wait, dear Lord, and so restrain
The hasty word
That only brings regret, and should remain
Unthought, unheard.

Teach me to wait. The prayer that faith inspires
Can make me see
Thy children all reflecting Thy desires,
At-one with Thee.

Teach me to wait: no kindly deeds are done,
No acts so small,
But Thou dost see and know them every one,
And mark them all.

Teach me to wait, in patience sow the seed
Of Christliness,
For Thou art here to fill each human need,
Waiting to bless.

Teach me to wait, to make earth's sacrifice
For things above
With willingness, and gladly pay the price
Of learning love.

And when through watchfulness I stand before
The heavenly gate,
With sole intent to love and serve Thee more—
Teach me to wait.
