The Lectures

Elmira, New York (Elmira Reformatory, auspices of First Church).

Lecturer: Salem Andrew Hart; introduced by Harold Moore, who said:—

In the sixty-first chapter of the book of Isaiah, in the first verse, we read, "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound." This statement was a foretelling of the coming of the Messiah, and it is recorded in the Gospel of Luke that Jesus, at the beginning of his earthly ministry, quoted these words of Isaiah, and, announcing himself as the one who would fulfill the law and the prophets, proceeded to carry out the purposes outlined by Isaiah.
