It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I tell of the numerous blessings brought into my life through the study and application of Christian Science. Early manhood found me with some dissatisfaction with the teaching of so-called orthodox theology, and other forms of religious beliefs were inquired into with varying interest. While I was in this frame of mind, Christian Science was mentioned to me by a friend who had been healed of a severe condition of catarrh. Occasionally church services and lectures were attended, and eventually the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was purchased; and very gradually a slight understanding of the truth of the teaching was acquired. Unfortunately, prejudice began to assert itself and this stood in the way of much progress. An invitation to take office in the church I was brought up in was accepted, and two years were spent quite happily in this service.
It was found during the third year that the knowledge gained by reading the Christian Science literature was coming into conflict with the other teaching, so much so that it was found impossible to take office for a further term. During the next two years religious thought was allowed to drift. Prejudice still stood in the way; but in spite of this, there was a feeling that Christian Science was the only teaching worth knowing.
In the spring of 1920 there came about an experience which in its effect was the means of compelling a change of outlook. This was brought about by my taking part in some hard physical labor. To human sense this was hardly wise, as there had been during the concluding weeks of the war a medical examination which ended in a total rejection, the reason for this being a condition of the heart which was not good. The heavy work accentuated this condition, and in six months activity was almost reduced to a standstill. The future was black; everything that makes for an active life was taken away. Faith in materia medica had been gone for some time, and misunderstanding of and prejudice against the author of Science and Health was still strong.
