The remarkable growth of Christian Science is often a matter of surprise to those who know little or nothing of the facts, but who have noted its rapid spread. That a mighty movement, founded by a gentle England woman without money, influence, or friends, should in the short space of about fifty years have encircled the globe, numbering in its ranks men and women of every calling and from every station of life, points to some deeper cause than a mere passing phase of religious emotion.

Why is it that the subject of what is generally known as spiritual healing is attracting the attention of thinkers throughout the world to an extent hitherto unprecedented? Is it not because after thousands of years of an ineffectual search for health through material methods, humanity is still crying out for a scientific and therefore sure remedy for its sickness and sin? Material medicine varies as a fashion. That which claims to cure today is found useless tomorrow, and is discarded for something else. Medical text-books become unreliable and obsolete in the course of a few years, and are replaced by ones more up-to-date, to be in turn displaced by newer theories. Now it may be asked, Is there no unfailing divine Principle which, when correctly applied, will govern men and their affairs harmoniously?

Two thousand years ago, Christ Jesus appeared upon the earth demonstrating scientific knowledge which healed all disease, destroyed sin, raised the dead, set aside the so-called law of gravitation, stilled the tempest, and multiplied loaves and fishes—all in opposition to the accepted beliefs of the age. Not only did Christ Jesus perform these wonderful works, but he declared that any who believed on him, that is, understood his teaching, would be able to do the same works and greater. Most people will admit that Christ Jesus was the most wonderful character in history, but possibly not all will realize that he was the greatest and most correct thinker in history.
