A news item in your issue of March 24 stated in substance that a hypnotist giving public demonstrations in your city had also delivered "lectures on Christian Science."

In order to correct the erroneous impression that one who practices hypnotism is qualified to deliver a Christian Science lecture, kindly allow me to say that a By-Law of the Manual of the Christian Science Mother Church prohibits the study of hypnotism. Therefore, Christian Scientists do not practice or advocate the use of hypnotism. Consequently, one who practices hypnotism is not qualified to give a Christian Science lecture. Authorized Christian Science lectures are delivered only by members of the Board of Lectureship of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, and are given under the auspices of a branch church or society of The Mother Church, or by direction of The Christian Science Board of Directors.

According to the teachings of Christian Science the practice of hypnotism is the action of the carnal or mortal mind, to which the Apostle Paul referred when he said: "To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God."
