Folket

In Folket for August 21 and September 4 a doctor has two articles under the heading "Healing by Faith," in which he attempts to give an exposition of Christian Science. Though Christian Scientists will appreciate his in many respects intelligent and appreciative discussion of Christian Science, there are some points which I should like to correct.

Christian Science healing is the result of prayer; and as Mrs. Eddy writes in her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 1), "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."

Christian Science does not teach that men are "to be considered as parts of God's spirit," but that God is Spirit, the only Spirit, almighty and infinite, and that man is His image and likeness. Therefore the real man, or as Paul says, "the new man," is spiritual and perfect. Jesus said, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." Mrs. Eddy says that we must understand spiritual existence, which is above the world of the material senses. This understanding is reached only through ceaseless prayer; and proportionately as one reaches it one gains dominion over sickness and every ill "that flesh is heir to," which are no part of spiritual being.
