The Day of Thanksgiving

THE keen appreciation of Christian Science and the deep gratitude for its teachings which are felt by Christian Scientists enable them to dwell in the mental state of thanksgiving. Joy and gratitude, expressed in thought, word, and deed, are the unceasing prayer rising to our Father-Mother God in ever conscious acknowledgment of the abundant spiritual blessings which never cease to flow from Him. Christian Scientists, realizing the truth that God and man forever coexist, raise their song of praise to their heavenly Father in ascending scale. They know in part the privilege and joy of living in conscious realization of the truth; of studying the Science of Life, and learning better each day how to be grateful for its teachings. With the tone of meekness and loving humility, their profound gratitude "unto God for his unspeakable gift" finds its way into living expression. Therefore, the sincere demonstrator of Truth anticipates and enjoys the special season of thanksgiving provided each year. Thanksgiving Day knows no creed. It supplies the occasion for expression of an enlarged and growing sense of gratitude to God through which all mankind may come to know Him better.

Gratitude is a marvelous quality. It turns thought toward the contemplation of things spiritual. To be truly grateful, thought must transcend the material things in which one often finds natural cause for gratitude, and rise with songs of thanksgiving into the comprehension of the source of all benevolence. In Christian Science it is learned that real thanksgiving includes a recognition of God as Life, Truth, and Love, and of this triune Principle as the creator of all reality. Christian Scientists are more securely grasping the truth that all good is of God; that He supplies every need; in fact, that God is good, and that nothing evil or erroneous emanates from Him.

A glance in retrospect to measure progress often results in the discovery that one has been prevented from realizing a fuller measure of the real blessing of divine Love because he has been and is lacking in appreciation of and gratitude for the vital truth that man as the reflection of divine Love already possesses all good. A clear and demonstrable recognition of this truth is of priceless value, for it is founded upon understanding of God and His creation. It is therefore logical and divinely natural that gratitude and the ability to demonstrate Truth should be manifestly conjoined in the experience of those who are faithful to their trust as allegiant disciples.
