Signs of the Times

[Editorial in the News, Dallas, Texas]

Surely we ought to be more humble today than ever before, on this annual reminder of the day when God-fearing forbears of ours knelt in the snow and gave thanks for huts where we have homes with every convenience; for a bare sustenance wrung from stubborn nature, while our granaries and warehouses are helpless to hold our plenty; ... for escape from overseas tyranny in matters of conscience, whereas we are free from every let or hindrance that might humanly bind the heart of man.

When we uncover our heads and bow before the Giver of good and perfect gifts, let us ask not that He will add to our possessions, but rather that He will show us how to diminish them wisely by sharing them with our brothers now sorely in need. Let us petition not for place or prestige for our country, but for worthiness to win the love of the nations with which we deal. Let us give thanks not that we are not as other men are, but that in a time that calls for succor we are able to aid. By so doing, when we shall have returned from the place of prayer, we shall be justified without being proud, glad without exultation, and generous without ostentation.
