Perception

I see Thee only when I look above,
Far from earth's vanities and fancied rest;
I see Thee best when, bathed in living love,
My grateful heart responds to Thy behest.

I feel Thee truly when Thy soft command Bids me draw nearer in my aching need.

'Tis then I clasp Thy sure protecting hand And find my Helper true in name and deed.

I hear Thee, when I listen for Thy voice,
Amid the jarring turmoil of life's stress,
Catching enough of music to rejoice
Because I know Thou'rt here to guide and bless.

I know Thee, Lord, through all the trembling fears
That guide me to the comfort of Thy breast,

And I can almost bless the very tears
That win for me such sweet, harmonious rest.

I feel Thy nearness. As each closing day Choked with the error of material things
Glides to dark nothingness, I grope my way, And find the dawn on clear perception's wings.

'Tis thus we know Thee, Lord; nor day nor night
Can tempt our faltering footsteps far from Thee.
For Thou art present Love—and in Love's sight
We live and ever dwell harmoniously.
