Christian Science made its first impression upon me in...
Christian Science made its first impression upon me in the year 1905, during the winter of which I lived with a friend who a short time before had taken up the study of Christian Science. The change I saw in her was all the recommendation I needed to accept Christian Science to help me out of something that was bothering me at that time, namely, a load of grief and disappointment under which I was bowed down. I had a great sense of failure with no ambition to combat it. I listened to what my friend told me of Christian Science, accepted what we read on the subject, and attended the church services with her. About the middle of the winter this load left me and I was free. That was my first healing in Christian Science.
Things went along rather smoothly for several years. I thought that all my problems had been solved, and talked glibly of being a Christian Scientist. I attended the church services, but did not try to find out what it was all about. When a testing time came, I had not prepared myself with any spiritual armor, and the enemy found me an easy prey.
From childhood I had been sensitive, and as I grew older I became supersensitive. When attacked by a physical ailment, to please my family I started on a course of medical treatment which lasted for eleven years and a half. At the same time, and to please myself, I started on a prayerful study of the Bible and its spiritual interpretation, as given in the teachings of Christian Science.
