In 1906 I became interested in Christian Science
In 1906 I became interested in Christian Science. At that time I was having osteopathic treatments for indigestion and some other ailments. A friend lent me "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and, as I read, I began to see that I could not serve two masters, so I determined to give up material remedies. I read diligently for several days, and suddenly realized that my fear of certain kinds of food from which I had abstained for a period of fifteen years was entirely gone; and I ate whatever I desired with no return of the pain that I had previously experienced. I was entirely healed of indigestion. I still suffered from headache, however, and it was about three months before all physical discord vanished. My gratitude was very great, and yet I did not understand how I had been healed, and my spiritual growth was slow.
For eight years I went on in this way, never desiring material medicine, but always asking help from a practitioner to solve the troubles that occasionally arose. Then I was left without means of support, and God's ever present law led me to accept a position which in two years left me residing in the Orient. This proved to be a testing time and I had many difficulties to overcome, one of which was lack of supply. When I got a clear realization of Mrs. Eddy's words in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 307), "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies," my daily needs were beautifully met.
An instantaneous healing of a growth on my face occurred while I was reading the Lesson-Sermon one day. My attention was constantly turning to this growth during the reading of the Lesson as well as at other times; but I suddenly turned from matter as causation, knowing that it was not a part of true being, and the healing was complete. A severe form of malaria was my most difficult problem; but with the help of a loving friend, the healing came and it was permanent. This form of disease in the Orient under materia medica is supposed to recur again and again.
