As a Man Thinketh
In the following statements from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 191) Mrs. Eddy discloses the way of escape from human bondage. There she writes: "The human thought must free itself from self-imposed materiality and bondage. It should no longer ask of the head, heart, or lungs: What are man's prospects for Mind is not helpless. Intelligence is not mute before non-intelligence." The Christian Scientist does not consult matter, but Mind, regarding all his prospects. Through spiritual intelligence he renders mute the discordant claims of sin and suffering. If one's health prospects seem bad, he can scientifically prove that health is a property of divine Mind, and that in the measure in which he reflects the purity and harmony of this Mind, he can conquer disease and enjoy health unprecariously, on the safe and permanent basis of God, Spirit. There is one Mind, and one source of health, sufficient for all.
Mankind in general adopts traditional beliefs and centers thought on the endless procession of physical sense impressions. These fleeting impressions are but as a mist hiding, yet not affecting, the substance of the spiritual creation and spiritual man. Moreover, through the application of Christian Science, the mist of false belief is dispelled by the radiance of spiritual ideas, for the truth about health, righteousness, happiness, and invariable abundance destroys human fear regarding these changeless impartations of Spirit, God.
Rising above the convention of material, temporal thinking, Paul wrote, "We look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." Though unseen by the physical senses, even as God is unseen, eternal spiritual being is actually present. What are we mentally contemplating? Material fiction and friction, or the peace and power of spiritual being? True looking consists in immortal thinking, in acknowledging God as the one perfect cause, and man as expressing fadeless vision, strength, intelligence, all of them emanations of Love and betokening the permanence of God's love to man. Every instant spiritual man is conscious of his divine heritage and is enjoying the fruits of unity with his creator.
