I wish to express my gratitude for what Christian Science...
I wish to express my gratitude for what Christian Science has done for me.
I was discharged from the British army in 1917 with valvular heart trouble and pulmonary disease. I had been home only a few days when I had a very serious breakdown. I remained in bed for eight weeks, and no one in the neighborhood ever expected to see me alive again. I remained in this sad plight for about five years, and always carried with me a brandy flask. I had about nine medical men attend me during this time, but did not get any better; in fact, I got weaker, and was afraid to cross the road by myself or to stay in the house for a few minutes alone.
During this extremity I fell into the hands of hypnotist, but did not know this at the time. While I was having this treatment, a woman who did some work for my wife asked how I was and my wife told her that I was having some fresh treatment which she hoped would be good. On her way home this person told a lady who was a student of Christian Science about me; this student at once wrote my wife a letter and also sent a Christian Science Sentinel. In the letter she invited my wife to come to see her. She went and was warmly welcomed. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was placed in her hands, and she opened it at the Preface. On reading the words (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," she said aloud, "I have found what I was looking for." On her return I inquired very fearfully how she had got on. She replied, "You have heard of heaven on earth; I have been there for two hours today." My wife went to the Christian Science Reading Room and borrowed Science and Health and also "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur, which we read together. As we read the latter book and came to the part about Mr. Quimby, my wife said, "That is where you are." I then realized how hopeless was my position in having hypnotic treatment.
