Christian Scientists are faithfully obeying their own...

Whitley Seaside Chronicle

Christian Scientists are faithfully obeying their own Church Manual, and the Christian Science church is functioning as our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, designed that it should. It should be known that Christian Scientists bind themselves to the Christian Science church in their desire for holiness, not primarily for bodily health.

Our critic fears, apparently, that the minds of your readers may have been confused by the report of the lecture on Christian Science in your issue of September 20. In this connection I would draw your attention to the following, given as a quotation from Mrs. Eddy's writings: "The introduction of pure abstractions into Christian Science tends to confuse the mind of the reader." What Mrs. Eddy said is as follows: "The introduction of pure abstractions into Christian Science, without their correlatives, leaves the divine Principle of Christian Science unexplained, tends to confuse the mind of the reader, and ultimates in what Jesus denounced, namely, straining at gnats and swallowing camels" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 218).
