In the last thirteen years I have had many opportunities...
In the last thirteen years I have had many opportunities to use and apply Christian Science, and never once have I found it lacking in meeting my every need. As a small boy, before knowing anything about Christian Science, I had many severe attacks of appendicitis and was forced to stay in bed for weeks at a time, suffering with intense pain. The doctors always refused to operate when I was sick, as they said I would not live; and when I was well they said there was no reason to operate.
During the summer of 1918, while in a boys' camp, I had one of these attacks. At that time the director of the camp definitely advised my mother to have me operated upon as soon as I returned home. The director had been operated on for the same ailment two months previously. Camp soon closed; and as I had almost recovered, I went to a near-by town to meet my mother. During the day my mother said that she had met a Christian Scientist who had told her that I could be completely healed through Christian Science. This was on a Wednesday; therefore we attended the testimony meeting of the small Christian Science Society in the town. Here, where only a handful of people were gathered, I heard some of the many wonderful truths of Christian Science read from the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
The following morning we went to see a practitioner. From her I learned the nothingness, the unreality, of this sickness — or lie — which for so many years had seemed so real to me. I learned what my true birthright is, the absolute presence of perfection and nothing else, for there is nothing else. She made it clear to my mother and to me that the basis of this suffering I had been going through for so many years was nothing but a result of the fear expressed by all of us. She was right: the whole family, including myself, had feared that if I should do any strenuous exercise or eat certain foods I should have an attack; and I always did. The practitioner was asked to take up the work. She did; and in one treatment, before we left her house, the healing was complete. She had entirely destroyed the fear of disease in our consciousnesses through knowing that there is nothing but the perfection of God, and that man expresses this absolutely for he is made in God's image and likeness, perfect and spiritual, and that neither God nor God's man knows any thing about this lie called appendicitis. She clearly knew the truth about God, the truth about man, and the truth about man's relationship to God. My healing was instantaneous and permanent, for in the last thirteen years I have had no return of the trouble. I can truthfully say that since this healing I have exercised and eaten as I wished, for I know that all power is with God, for God is All.
