For the encouragement of anyone who seems to be having...
For the encouragement of anyone who seems to be having a slow healing in Christian Science I should like to tell of a demonstration. It is an example of mental surgery which I witnessed on my own body, when a malignant tumor was removed through Christian Science treatment alone. From the time I first knew of this trouble till the healing three years elapsed; and from the very beginning of it my life was apparently in constant danger from hemorrhage. However, this difficulty was overcome each time by Christian Science treatment.
I did not have much courage while trying to rise above the so-called incurable condition, for I was often discouraged to the point of shedding a few self-pitying tears; but I had something better— a little spark of faith and understanding. I remembered that in the Bible one reason given for failure to heal, or for failure to be healed, was unbelief or lack of understanding. The condition did not seem to improve during the three years, but got steadily worse until I went to my Association meeting. While there I gained such an increased insight into Christian Science that when the teacher told me that she felt I was healed, I also believed the healing would shortly be manifested. In fact it began immediately upon my return from this meeting. The next six days before the final healing were, however, the most trying period of my life, and the one which probably taught me most.
I am so glad to realize that healings are accomplished, not by persons, but by the operation of divine law in human consciousness. The clear instruction of my teacher, each treatment by a Christian Science practitioner, the love of the truth imbibed from my parents, every hour spent with the weekly Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly, every piece of authorized Christian Science literature read, every testimony heard, every lecture attended, every unkind or mean thought eradicated, every clear, scientific thought from friends, every effort to see God's idea and to think scientifically, all were factors in building up the receptivity to Truth which resulted in the removal of the trouble.
