"The great attainment"
The healing of disease and pain through the application of Christian Science is a joyful experience; and equally joyous and hope-restoring is the healing of the belief in failure and lack through the better understanding of God as infinite Life.
Men have been taught to believe that they are in the hands of fate; that the weather can destroy crops or bring an abundant harvest, and that these things are at the mercy of chance; that they may put into their business energy, skill, industry, intelligence, and yet experience failure through the selfish manipulations of others; that unemployment, like a threatening cloud, hangs over even the skilled worker, and that no amount of industry and thrift can quite dispel the fear of this shadow.
In many instances Christian Science is proving the fallacy of this age-old teaching. If one will but push aside his worrying fears, and ask himself, What do I need in order to be safe and happy? What am I trying to attain with all this struggle? and then turn to Christian Science for the true answer, he will find a healing from his frantic fears. But, always before the healing can come there must be this right-about-face in our thought-processes. This exchange of false beliefs for true thoughts is in itself the key to our success and our prosperity. On page 428 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has written, "To divest thought of false trusts and material evidences in order that the spiritual facts of being may appear,—this is the great attainment by means of which we shall sweep away the false and give place to the true."
