"The angel of his presence"

Sometimes in our study of Christian Science we pause for a moment with a prayerful expression akin to the following: Oh, if I could only retain all these glorious truths clearly in my thought! How can I best accomplish this end? We may have been impelled to this utterance by the recalling of things in our daily work which seemed to dim the vision obtained during a previous period of study; by duties in the routine of our activity which have required careful thought, and which were inclined to divert our attention from the direct contemplation of the precious truths we have newly read and realized.

Then, perhaps, there comes a problem to be solved when we cannot have immediate recourse to the reading of our textbooks. We begin recalling the truths we know—and lo! a clear statement of some idea of Truth, the exact one needed to annihilate the error, comes to thought out of the Bible or from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," or some of the other writings by Mary Baker Eddy. Or, perhaps, we recall a passage from a Christian Science lecture or from the authorized literature, thus finding renewed proof of the ever-availability of good. "The angel of his presence saved them."

These angels—spiritual thoughts—are impressed upon our hearts more strongly than we may realize, even while we are reading them; and they come to us to be utilized when specially needed. The more diligent and consecrated our study, the more of the truth we shall possess as our own, and the quicker it will come forth to meet our need. Furthermore, a clear sense of one's God-given ability to understand and retain the truth about to be studied is undoubtedly helpful. But there is no reason to be dismayed if we cannot recall every article we have read and all the truths of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's works. When these truths are needed they will appear, if we have assimilated the spirit and the letter of divine Science. Sooner or later, in one way or another, the reward of our every effort is sure to be manifested. All sincere students of Christian Science have had proofs of the ever-presence of God in this particular respect. Have we not many times, while at home or perhaps in a Reading Room, silently praying for light on a difficult problem, been led to open the Bible or Science and Health and found our eyes resting on the very passage which was needed to destroy the error?
