Perseverance

[Original article in German]

On page 514 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "Diligence, promptness, and perseverance ... carry the baggage of stern resolve, and keep pace with highest purpose." So it is in the study of Christian Science. Only by continuing in and adhering to the words of Christ Jesus, and to the letter and the spirit of divine Science, can we gain a full measure of spiritual blessedness, help, and the supply for all our human needs. To adhere consistently and without doubt to that which through proofs we have recognized as true and good, leads us steadily onward and enables us to make constant progress. There is no stagnation in the kingdom of God, of Spirit. Spirit is always active, and progress is truly the law of God. So we are continuously led forward and upward "unto the perfect day" in which (ibid., p. 325), "spiritual being is understood in all its perfection, continuity, and might."

Discouragement, however, frequently presents itself, because our desires are not fulfilled; we suffer seeming lack; or our desire is for more of material possessions. Our joyous courage has forsaken us, and hope—usually strong—is dragging its wings in the dust. Or else, as Mrs. Eddy writes on page 22 of Science and Health, our "endeavors are beset by fearful odds," and we are receiving "no present reward" for our good deeds. But "go not back to error," she admonishes, "nor become a sluggard in the race." Persevere!

Pause and examine the state of affairs earnestly! Has not many a great artist more than once thrown down his brush in despair, because he could not depict the beauty which he perceived mentally?
