Our Reading Rooms
In Habakkuk we read, "The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea." Christian Science Reading Rooms are having their part in the fulfilling of this prophecy. They are one of the means established by our wise Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, through which mankind is being helped to free itself of bondage and awaken to the eternal fact of God's presence here and now.
The Manual (Art. XXI, Sect. 1) requires that "each church of the Christian Science denomination shall have a Reading Room." Therefore, each Christian Science church maintains in its locality a Reading Room where all may come and "without money and without price" search for God and find Him. Here the Bible and all of Mrs. Eddy's writings may be studied in quietness and harmony, Christian Science periodicals may be read, and books published or sold by The Christian Science Publishing Society may be read, borrowed, or purchased.
The precious opportunities offered by the Christian Science Reading Rooms are made possible through the prayers, love, and financial support of the members of local Christian Science churches. What a gracious example of brotherly love! What a proof of willingness to give without expectation of material reward, and to lend a hand to those who may be without money, employment, health, or friends! The Reading Room is a proof that Christian Scientists are willing to give to a brother the opportunity to find man's relationship to God. Within this refuge many an unemployed person has so realized his relationship to his Father-Mother, God, that he has been able to go out and find his rightful place in the business world. Some have been guided safely through many days of unemployment through the encouragement and spiritual understanding gained from consecrated study of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, or the reading of articles in the Christian Science periodicals pertaining to their particular problem. Others have rejoiced that in seeking to solve the problem of unemployment they have learned lessons in Christian Science which have completely changed their point of view about business and have better equipped them for the employment which might open to them.
