Our Lectures

One of the most important activities given to us by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for the redemption of mankind, is the Board of Lectureship. Here the question may be asked with much profit, Are we utilizing this activity to its fullest and wisest capacity? In this connection the following observations are offered with the hope that they may be of service.

To establish a defined premise from which to survey this matter, it is well to bear in mind that primarily there are three factors directly allied to the work of the Board of Lectureship, namely: the church calling the lecturer, the public which is to be invited to attend, and the lecturer who is to bring the message—the message, rather than the messenger, being the primal consideration. This last point clearly seen will go far to eliminate personality, personal preference, and delayed lecture arrangements.

It is also important to remember that a Christian Science lecture is not designed primarily for Christian Scientists, but rather for the public. Therefore, it should be made easy for those who are sincerely seeking Truth to accept the invitation to gain an understanding of Christian Science. To this end, an ideal lecture may be defined as a Christian message containing profound truths as revealed in Christian Science, simply told. It is also the duty of the lecturer to correct misconceptions concerning our Cause and its Leader. The completed message should be couched in language which is so simple and loving that the stranger may be drawn with cords of divine compassion.
