At the time the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
At the time the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was placed in my hands, there seemed to be no way out of the darkness of human belief through which I had been blindly groping since a sickly and pampered childhood. A mysterious God, unconcerned with His creation, except where punishment was necessary, was my concept of Deity; and so at an early age I abandoned this concept, and thenceforth trusted to chance. Coupled with the chance or luck theory was the belief in death, the latter bringing a degree of comfort where the former had failed to lessen human woe; and, needless to say, matters went from bad to worse. Mrs. Eddy states (Science and Health, p. 533): "The belief in material life and intelligence is growing worse at every step, but error has its suppositional day and multiplies until the end thereof."
Words are inadequate to tell what Christian Science did for me then and is doing for me now. I was unfamiliar with the New Testament, and Christian Science led me directly to the teachings of Jesus and truthfully and intelligently explained them. This reading of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook filled my heart with a hope that I was about to cast aside; for I was not only lost, but numb with cynicism and resentment. The few glimpses of spiritual truth which I had ever had previously were thurst aside by the disturbing evidence before the material senses, and I was seemingly left without any means of conquering a deep and growing sense of futility. Christian Science soon separated the tares from the wheat, and all resentment and cynicism vanished almost immediately, together with other faults of character.
After beginning the study of Christian Science I went through many fiery trials, emerging from each completely unharmed, stronger, and thankful for the test. Through these and many perplexing problems a Christian Science practitioner has lovingly guided me, and in addition has generously helped me to gain a fuller understanding of the truth.
